PhD in Business and Organisation
Overview
The primary objective of the ABRI Full-Time PhD Programme is to offer its candidates rigorous training for an academic career, supporting them to become future leaders in business research and education. We achieve this objective by offering a programme which includes coursework and supervised PhD research.
Entry requirements
Possession of a Master’s degree is a prerequisite for beginning a Doctoral appointment with ABRI. Most of the Doctoral candidates are employed by the university as trainee research assistants ('Assistent in Opleiding', AIO) or as a trainee researcher ('Onderzoeker in Opleiding', OIO). The candidate may also be employed elsewhere or carry out research in his or her own time. However, in order to work in the Netherlands, non-EU candidates must have a residence permit specifically for this purpose. ABRI’s Doctoral Office helps with all necessary arrangements.
PhD Research Project
Carrying out PhD research is the most important task of a doctoral candidate. The PhD research can be based on either:
- A PhD project proposed by one of the faculty members
- A PhD project proposed by the candidate who intends to carry out the research
More information about possible PhD trajectories should be requested from faculties in which a candidate intends to do his/her PhD research.
Doctoral candidates are expected to begin working on their PhD research projects from the first day on the job. At the end of the first year Doctoral candidates are expected to submit a written research proposal which describes the question(s), positioning, method and so on, of the research they are going to carry out in the remaining three years they are in the PhD programme. Two experts in the field in which the research is done will review the proposal. Based on their reviews a decision will be made as to whether Doctoral candidates can continue their research.
The PhD research can adopt any of the business research methods, and include a single or multiple studies. The research should result in a PhD dissertation. The design of the candidate’s dissertation should be agreed upon with his/her supervisors. The ABRI course curriculum is designed to assist Doctoral candidates’ in carrying out their PhD research.
