Moral disengagement as a social phenomenon: effects of moral disengagement on moral judgments of others and shared cognition in groups
Schäfer, UlfMoral disengagement theory proposes that people are able to reconstrue morality, reevaluating behaviors formerly judged to be immoral as amoral, morally permissible, or even morally obligatory; or to reconstrue agency in the behavior, thereby distancing themselves from being responsible for their doing. To date, scholars have investigated moral disengagement primarily as an intrapsychic phenomenon. Attempting to shed light on how people behave unethically when they are not operating in the shadows or when they do so in concert with others, this dissertation contributes particularly to the moral disengagement literature that transcends the frontier of the individual and explores moral disengagement as a social phenomenon.
 
Short biography
Ulf Schäfer is an associate professor of practice for leadership, organization, and human resources at SDA Bocconi in Milan. He completed his PhD studies at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He studied in Germany, the United States, the Netherlands, and Canada and graduated with an M.A. in philosophy, mathematics, logic and theory of science from Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and with an MBA from Erasmus Universiteit’s Rotterdam School of Management. Before joining SDA Bocconi, Ulf worked for University of Bonn, A.T. Kearney, Sapient, DaimlerChrysler, and ESMT Berlin.
